In collaboration with New Amsterdam Surf Association, we created limited edition 0222 merchandise for the staff and DJs of the seventh edition of De Huistuin. We visited De Huistuin and spoke with the brothers behind this house event.
On Friday, April 11, the Jalving brothers & friends transformed beach pavilion Paal 9 into a house music venue for the seventh edition of De Huistuin. Around 400 house music lovers made their way to the southernmost tip of Texel to enjoy DJ sets from artists like Mudfat, Sun & Sol, Dan Dusty, and Milion. De Huistuin is a house party on Texel featuring nationally and internationally respected house DJs and a constantly changing location. How did this event come to be? Where does the organization find these DJs, and why is the date of the next De Huistuin always a surprise?
The Jalving Brothers & Friends
De Huistuin is the brainchild of brothers Niels and Lars Jalving. When they were asked in the fall of 2022 if they could organize a house party in De Question Plaza (a former nightclub on Texel), things quickly started to take shape. Both Niels and Lars are DJs who perform weekly in and around Amsterdam and have built a strong network in the city’s house scene. This gave the brothers a unique opportunity to offer their DJ friends and up-and-coming talents from the city a stage on Texel. They spread the word, and it didn’t take long before there was enough interest from friends to make the event a reality. De Huistuin family was born.
Together with their friend Rick, Niels and Lars came up with the idea to organize an event during the period between January and April—a time that often feels hopeless for many young people on Texel. The island is especially quiet during these months, and hardly anything is organized for young people—let alone a house party. Given the condition of the old nightclub, the brothers decided to go all in. The venue was transformed into a cozy concept: the stage became the living room, and the dance floor became the garden. Hence the name: De Huistuin (The Housegarden), which also nods to the genre of music—house.
De Huistuin
Now seven editions in, De Huistuin has always sold out. Yet the event always takes place at a different location and on a different date. By now, this may very well be De Huistuin's signature feature—but unfortunately, the island doesn’t offer many suitable venue options. The Jalving brothers quickly discovered that from January to April, there are practically no venues available to host an indoor house party. The limited availability forces De Huistuin to work with the dates and locations provided by local entrepreneurs. These shifting dates and locations have now become part of the concept, and the unpredictability makes the event truly one of a kind.
When’s the next De Huistuin? God only knows. But that there will be a next one, is for certain. Follow the event’s Instagram to stay up to date with the latest developments.
